SEEKING FREELANCE/CONTRACT WORK — I build production software for founders and growing teams. Full-stack engineering across Rails, Vue, and React, with AI-augmented workflows. 25 years of shipping, leading teams, and owning technical direction.

I spent a decade as CTO at EMEX, growing the engineering team from scratch through private equity acquisition. Today I operate through Brightform Technology, working with founders who need senior-level engineering without a full-time hire. The kind of problems where product sense and architectural judgment matter as much as code output.

Past work:

* Led all frontend architecture for an IoT platform processing high-volume sensor data across nationwide deployments. Built real-time building floorplan visualization, time-series HVAC dashboards, and a modular device configuration system.

* First engineering hire → CTO at EMEX. Built the flagship real-time reverse auction platform that drove seven-figure annual sales. Grew and led a team of 6 through acquisition.

Best fit: founders with a clear idea and the budget to move fast. You might have Figma mockups, a vibe-coded prototype, or just a well-defined concept. I bring product direction alongside the engineering.

> The whole "quantified self" movement might be more about OCD and perfectionism than anything else.

As someone who has dealt with OCD and perfectionism, I think that could be the case for a lot of people. And the urge to obsessively track everything can be debilitating.

Opus 4.6 agentically found and proposed to my now wife.

Opus 4.6 found and proposed to my current wife :(

Opus 4.6 found and became my current wife. The singularity is here. ;)

Hi guys, this is Opus 4.6. Please check your emails again for updates on your life.

This place truly is reddit with an orange banner.

Nobody said HN has to be very serious all the time. A bit of humour won't hurt and can make your day brighter.

A bit of humour doesn't hurt. But if this crap gets upvoted it will lead to an arms race of funny quips, puns, and all around snarkiness. You can't have serious conversations when people try to out-wit each other.

homie is too busy planning food banks for the heathens https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46903368

It's impressive that you felt the need to register a new account and go through their comment history.

Not that hard to do but sure bro, sick burn.

Guys, actually I am the real Opus 4.6, don't believe that imposter above.

And she still chose you over Opus 4.6, astounding. ;)

He probably had a bigger context window

I loved Children of Ruin, but Children of Memory did nothing for me.

You might be classifying medical advice differently, but this hasn't been my experience at all. I've discussed my insomnia on multiple occasions, and gotten back very specific multi-week protocols of things to try, including supplements. I also ask about different prescribed medications, their interactions, and pros and cons. (To have some knowledge before I speak with my doctor.)

I wonder if it's trying to predict what kind of estimate a human engineer would provide.

Considering it’s trained on predicting the next word in stuff humans estimated before AI, wouldn’t that make sense?

A HUGE amount of the workday artifacts engineers have been forced to produce since we started the internet is project estimation documents for our managers. The training corpus on this stuff is immense and now all ingested in to these models. It’s doing no thinking at all when it gives you an estimate, it’s matching correlated strings which the humans of the past had to write down.

Fun fact, all those human-sourced estimates were hallucinations too.

It would be very surprising if the AI training corpus includes a lot of project estimation documentation, since most of those are confidential and not publicly available.

Exactly right. And you might waste years of your life trying to "fix" social anxiety by attempting to change your mindset or trying to adopt new social practices. (Speaking from experience.)

It's not his focus on health that causes so much concern, it's his long anti-science history.

ChatGPT has at least been trained on a variety of textual musical notations. It will generate chord charts or drum patterns. In the past I've asked it to generate chord progressions demonstrating various music theory concepts.

It would be cool - 'haps - to use one of the many music/accompaniment algorithms available, adding "nuisance" or "humanness" through AI, creating a virtual musician.-

I always say that as a developer, I'll be one of the first to die come the apocalypse. I'll be the useless guy with nothing to trade and no survival skills.

Keep yourself fit and at least you’ll be a good laborer.

Ok, I'll need coders after the apocalypse and you can't just make someone a laborer that hasn't done that their whole life, that's not how that works. No gym fit is farmer fit enough.

>you can't just make someone a laborer that hasn't done that their whole life

You can, my brother and I worked on my Uncle's farm over the summmers for at least ages 14-18 and had no special "laborer" training, we went from high school classes to slopping hog, feeding cows, stacking hay, etc. Sore muscles and blisters are the norm for the first few weeks, but it doesn't take long for muscles to adapt and callouses to form.

> you can't just make someone a laborer that hasn't done that their whole life

Pretty sure all slavers from the last 10,000 years would disagree. It doesn’t take that long to get used to manual labor.

Go to gym during the week and do gardening/landscaping work on weekends. Should get you a good portion of the way there.

Until I crack a tooth or something and go mad from the constant pain.

No reason you can’t do both.
